I Can Do Marketing Myself, I Don’t Need to Hire a Marketing Company

Let me ask you a question – would you perform your own surgery or put a crown on your tooth? Of course not, you would go to a doctor or a dentist because they are the expert! Granted, you could learn how to do these things in school, but it will save you time and money in the long run to hire someone who specializes in these services.

The same is true with marketing. Marketing is far from easy. In fact, it is a very complicated discipline that can take years of study to master. If you are a small business just opening your doors, or you have all you can handle in running your business, it’s best to let a marketing company do the detailed work for you. You would be surprised at how tedious marketing can be, and for most business owners, the time spent on marketing is better used for other things.

Here are five reasons why it’s often better to hire a marketing company:

1) You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know.

While you might feel savvy after reading a marketing book or watching a marketing video, it doesn’t compare to working with an experienced marketer. You simply don’t know what you don’t know, and if you do it yourself, what you don’t know could hurt your business. Qualified marketing companies will know what works and what to avoid. For instance, it may not make sense to pour money into SEO or your website when the better focus is Content Marketing or Paid Advertising. Marketers will also make informed suggestions such as the need for a video or more social media campaigns. The list goes on.

2) A Business Owner Can’t Be Objective.

Business owners tend to be absorbed by their business—a disadvantage when it comes to do-it-yourself marketing. Effective marketing starts with an unbiased perspective. To be successful at marketing, a clear view of the business’ strengths and weaknesses must be evaluated. As the owner of a business, you just don’t have that objectivity, hence the need for an objective, third party marketing company.

3) The Best Marketing Isn’t About A System or Formula.

As a small business owner attempting to save money, it is easy to get sucked into the overcrowded internet world of self-proclaimed marketing gurus with “Amazing Profit-Making Marketing” systems. Believe me, they all sound amazing and they all claim amazing results, but every business is different, and a cookie-cutter, systematic approach is not always the most effective way to market a business or product.

4) Great Marketing Requires Talent.

Great marketing is part science, part art. Yet, the creative part often gets lost or diminished in this ever-advancing tech world. Focused, creative talent is the ingredient that helps communicate your message and persuade your potential customers to buy. Again, this goes back to my dentist example above. When you hire a talented, experienced marketer, you will see the difference in your online exposure.

5) Do-It-Yourself Marketing Doesn’t Really Save Money.

Because you’re not spending money on outside resources you might think you’re saving tons of money by doing it yourself. However, it’s not just what you spend, it’s what you spend and get back on what you spend. Great marketing will get you back more, and sometimes significantly more, than what you spend. Remember, you have to factor in what your time is worth. As a business owner, your time is not cheap. If you kept track of every minute you spent trying to do marketing yourself and applied a dollar value to that, you’d be surprised at the expense. Also, realize that it is taking away your valuable time and talent from running the other aspects of your business.

Part of being a smart business owner is realizing that you can’t do everything yourself and knowing when to ask for help. We are here to help, so feel free to call or email us so you can get back to doing what you do best – running your business.
